Biography
Timothy Groves is Empire Innovation Professor of Nanoscale Science (Emeritus) at the University at Albany, State University of New York. He received his BS degree in physics from Stanford University and his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Chicago. Before joining the SUNY faculty in 2007 he worked in industrial semiconductor research and development with HP, IBM, and Leica. He is recognized worldwide as an expert in the optics of particle beam instruments. This includes electron, ion, and photon beams for microscopy, physical and chemical analysis, and lithographic patterning. In 2014 he published a textbook titled ‘Charged Particle Optics Theory, An Introduction’ with CRC Press. He identifies the most important ideas in this field, and derives them mathematically from first principles of physics. He maintains a lifelong passion for science and technology. He especially enjoys communicating these to intelligent non-experts of all ages.
